White House Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
While Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.
Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
