New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
